2027 FUNDRAISING PROJECT – a Paediatric Ultrasound
Flinders District Lions, through its annual Charity Golf Day on 1 March 2027 and Flinders Motoring Heritage event on Easter Sunday 28 March 2027, has agreed to assist funding a new Sonosite Paediatric Ultrasound machine for use at Bayside Health’s Frankston Hospital’s new Paediatric Emergency Ward.
Bayside Health is a major public health care network formed by the integration of Alfred Health, Bayside Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health Service and Kooweerup Regional Health Service. On the Mornington Peninsula it incorporates: Peninsula University (Frankston) Hospital, Rosebud Hospital, The Mornington Centre, Frankston Public Surgical Centre and is associated with Monash University Frankston Campus (Nursing Education).
The Paediatric Emergency Department is responsible for treatment of all children under the age of 19. In 2025-26 Frankston dealt with 17,048 presentations including Rosebud, tending to 4,000.
A Paediatric ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to examine internal organs, tissues, and blood vessels in infants and children without exposing them to radiation It will improve diagnostics for children and assists with inserting intravenous catheters in ‘chubby infants and including the following applications:
Heart and Lung: Ultrasound allows immediate assessment of the critically unwell child with sepsis and breathing problems in the emergency department. The use of ultrasound of the lungs is more accurate than the conventional chest x-ray.
Abdomen: Evaluates the liver, spleen, gall bladder, and pancreas to find causes of stomach pain, appendicitis, blockages, or masses.
Urinary Tract & Kidneys: Checks for kidney stones, congenital abnormalities, blockages, or urinary tract infections.
Hips: Screens newborns and infants for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), where the hip joint is unstable.
Head & Brain: Uses the open soft spots (fontanelles) in infants to check for bleeding, fluid buildup (hydrocephalus), or cysts.
Musculoskeletal: Assesses joints, muscles, tendons, and soft-tissue lumps or neck swellings.
The funding proposal, based on a recent quote, is as follows:
Flinders District Lions - Sonosite LX Ultrasound System (the base unit) - $46,350.
Bayside Health and other philanthropic groups, additional funding for up to
