Women’s homelessness, often as a consequence of domestic and family violence, is a pressing national crisis in Australia. Each night 58,000 women find themselves without a safe place to call home, highlighting the critical importance of addressing the interconnected issues of domestic violence and homelessness.
The Mornington Peninsula has the fourth highest incident of homelessness in Victoria. There are 600 men and women seeking accommodation every night. Of these, half are women, and 30% of the women have children - many escaping family violence.
Women’s Community Shelters (WCS), in partnership with the Mornington Peninsula Council, local community and local steering committees is mobilising its unique social franchise model of shelter establishment to open a new crisis centre on the Mornington Peninsula for women with or without children.
WCS has a proven model in NSW- a detailed understanding of their business can be viewed Women's Community Shelters website and in their annual report.
This support encompasses vital funding, and we need the support of the local community on the Mornington Peninsula. The Lions Club of Flinders District is working with WCS to help make this happen. The first house will be called Moonah House. WCS’s Moonah House is a registered Company Limited by Guarantee and has registered DGR charitable status with the ATO.
Flinders Lions has resolved to support Moonah House projects on the Mornington Peninsula through its Flinders Motoring Heritage and Charity Golf Day events.
Mornington Peninsula Shire, in association with WCS and Flinders Lions will conduct a Forum in Flinders on Friday 7th February 2025 to raise awareness and seek funds for Moonah House and related facilities.
Opportunities for sponsorship and donations may be accessed at the link below. All funds raised will support women and children on the Mornington Peninsula experiencing homelessness and domestic and family violence.
